Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano – two pioneers of women’s MMA – will make their blockbuster return to the cage on May 16, and the bookmakers are predicting victory for ‘Rowdy Ronda’.
In a huge announcement that has shocked fight fans around the world, it was confirmed this week that Rousey and Carano will square off at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California on Saturday, May 16, with the fight being live streamed on Netflix.
"Been waiting so long to announce this – me and Gina Carano are going to throw down in the biggest super-fight in women's combat sport history,” said Rousey. “This is for all MMA fans past, present and future. More to come… much more.”
The fight will pit two of the most important figures in women’s history against each other, and while both have iconic status in the sport, the bookies are in no doubt about who will have their hand raised.
Rousey has been installed as a 1.22 favourite for the bout, with Carano considered a 4.5 underdog.
‘Rowdy Ronda’ established herself as an MMA star outside of the UFC, winning gold in the Strikeforce promotion, and it was her popularity that forced the world’s premier MMA company to introduce female fighters to the roster.
She went on to establish herself as one of the most dominant champions in UFC history, submitting a bunch of contenders with her signature armbar, but her aura of invincibility was shattered in November 2015 when she was knocked out by Holly Holm in the second round.
Rousey then suffered a 48-second knockout loss to the legendary Amanda Nunes in December 2016, and that looked to be the end of her MMA career as she crossed over into acting and professional wrestling as a star in the WWE.
During her time away from the Octagon she was routinely asked about a potential comeback, and the 39-year-old admitted only one potential fight held her interest – a showdown with Carano.
“Ronda came to me and said there is only one person she would make a comeback for and it has been her dream to make this fight happen between us,” Carano revealed.
"She thanked me for opening up doors for her in her career and was respectful in asking for this fight to happen. This is an honour. I believe I will walk out of this fight with the win and I anticipate it will not come easy, which I welcome. This is as much for Ronda and me as it is for the fans and mixed martial arts community. What a time to be alive.”
While it has been almost a decade since Rousey last competed, it has been even longer since Carano entered a cage. Carano is widely considered the first true female star in mixed martial arts, having become a box office attraction while fighting for the Strikeforce promotion between 2006 and 2009.
The 43-year-old won the first seven fights of her professional career, but stepped away from MMA following a first-round knockout loss at the hands of another female MMA legend, Cris Cyborg, in August 2009.
Since then she has focused on an acting career that has seen her land high profile roles on both the big screen and the small screen, but after years of being asked, she is finally heading back to where she first made here name – the MMA cage.
However, the bookmakers are not expecting a glorious return from ‘Conviction’.
