The German BBL Finals get underway in Munich on Friday as Bayern and Alba Berlin renew one of the biggest rivalries in German basketball. Bayern have been the most consistent side throughout the season, while Alba arrive with momentum after a dominant Game 5 victory in the semifinals.
Bayern Relying on Their Defensive Identity
Bayern Munich have looked like the strongest team in Germany throughout the season, finishing top of the Bundesliga regular-season standings with an impressive 29-5 record before cruising past Trier 3-0 in the quarterfinals.
Svetislav Pesic’s side had plenty of difficulties in Game 1 against Bonn, entering the final quarter eight points behind before producing a strong comeback to secure an 83-78 victory. They followed that up with a far more convincing display in Game 2, taking control early and winning 91-69.
The Bavarians finished the job with a dominant 77-57 road victory in Game 3, winning all four quarters and completely controlling the defensive end. Xavier Rathan-Mayes led the way with 27 points, while Isaiah Mike added 11.
Alba Berlin Have Fitness Concerns
Unlike Bayern, Alba Berlin were pushed to the limit in both of their playoff matchups, needing five games to eliminate Vechta in the quarterfinals. They eventually sealed the series with a 98-89 home victory.
Their start to the semifinals against Bamberg was outstanding, building a 20-point lead before halftime and cruising to a 105-86 victory while converting an incredible 21 of 23 two-point attempts. Alba followed that performance with another convincing 85-71 win in Game 2.
Road games proved problematic once again for the Albatrosses as they suffered back-to-back defeats, 81-73 and 81-67, allowing Bamberg to force a decider. Alba responded in emphatic fashion, crushing their opponents 97-66 in Game 5 with six players reaching double figures.
