Italy started the second phase of Mundobasket 2027 qualifiers with a dramatic 78-76 defeat against Bosnia & Herzegovina on Friday evening, which ended their eight-game winning streak.

Azzurri had very poor shooting numbers in Tuzla, landing just 23 out of 62 field goal attempts and having a lot of problems containing Jusuf Nurkic in the paint. Veteran Simone Fontecchio was their top scorer with 14 points and six rebounds, shooting 5/12 from the field.

Italy had a lot of success in the previous stage, where they won five out of six games, and still have a very high chance of making it to Qatar, sharing second place in the group with Serbia (5-2 record).

Serbia Building Momentum

Serbia had certain problems in the first stage, where they won four out of six matches (lost twice to Turkey), but they looked solid in Friday's home clash against Iceland, claiming a convincing 102-73 victory in Belgrade.

The Eagles had great two-point selection here, landing 28 out of 46 attempts, while controlling the boards with a 45-27 advantage. Youngsters Nikola Tanaskovic (23) and Nikola Jovic (21) were the top scorers, while NBA superstar Nikola Jokic finished with just six points and 13 rebounds.

Dusan Alimpijevic's side now has a 5-2 record and probably needs two more wins in the remaining five rounds to punch their ticket to Qatar.

Italy v Serbia

Italy are traditionally causing a lot of trouble for Serbia in their head-to-head matches. I expect Azzurri to be heavily motivated here and to show that a defeat to Bosnia & Herzegovina was just a bad day. A home win in a +8.5 handicap is tipped.
