The Philippines has found it difficult to produce points against top teams in the FIBA World Cup qualifiers, recording just 66 points in both games against New Zealand and Australia. With another tough matchup ahead in Auckland, there are no signs of their offensive struggles easing. The key recommendation is to consider betting on Under 166.5 points for the upcoming game, anticipating a defensive battle.

Match Preview

This Group A clash sees New Zealand host the Philippines, with both teams already through to the second phase but still battling to carry over as many points as possible. The first H2H clash was a tight contest with just 135 points total.

New Zealand have almost secured a spot in the next phase of the FIBA World Cup 2027 qualifiers, but they will of course battle for victories in the remaining two rounds to carry over as many points as possible, currently sitting in 2nd place with a 2-2 record.

The start of this campaign was very troublesome for them, losing the derby to Australia 84-79 on the road, then being beaten by the same opponent 79-77 in front of the home crowd after collapsing in the final quarter (15-22).

Their first victory was sealed in the third round in Manila, beating the Philippines 69-66, where both sides shot under 35% from the field. New Zealand’s Samuel Mennenga was named man of the match with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

In their most recent appearance, New Zealand outplayed minnows Guam 99-67, being very dominant on the boards with a 54-28 rebounding advantage. Jack Andrew missed just one of his 10 shots and ended as the top scorer with 20 points and nine rebounds.

Philippines Failed To Impress Against Australia

The Philippines qualified for the second phase, but their results and performances have been far from convincing, currently sitting in 3rd place in Group A with a 2-2 record.

Both of their victories came in the opening two rounds against last-placed Guam, winning the first clash on the road 87-46, then 95-71 at home, while their first loss came in the follow-up clash against New Zealand 69-66 in late February.

A couple of days later, they hosted Australia and were heavily outplayed 93-66, losing all four quarters. The Philippines had 12 turnovers to Australia's five and shot just 34% from the field. Justin Brownlee was their standout performer with 20 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

Verdict

The Philippines struggled against the stronger teams so far in these qualifiers, scoring just 66 points against both New Zealand and Australia earlier in the campaign. I don’t see those numbers getting any better in Auckland, so Under 166.5 points looks like the best bet.
