Both teams impressed in the first round. Karmine Corp methodically disposed of Anyone’s Legend, while LYON won a very scrappy match against Team Secret Whalers. Despite the quality difference in the two opponents LYON and KC faced, both deserve praise.

On paper, there is not much to separate them quality-wise, but I was more impressed with Karmine Corp’s methodical playstyle and their macro. They could look worse on Saturday, but a repeat performance from Friday should net KC a win.

LYON With More to Prove

LYON started their LoL Worlds campaign with a victory over Team Secret Whales. The game was off the rails very early, with Berserker and Inspired picking up two kills.

The two teams traded early skirmishes, which allowed TSW to claw back some of the deficit slightly, but LYON stayed in control of the game wire-to-wire and eventually closed it out.

It was a scrappy game, which is a style of game in which LYON typically do not do well. This time was different: they approached the match with a clear plan and stayed composed, not letting Team Secret Whales do their thing.

LYON won, but they did not show anything spectacular. It was mostly TSW not playing well, so it is fair to say that LYON have more to prove.

Karmine Corp Look Solid

Karmine Corp picked up a massive win on the first day of LoL Worlds Swiss Stage, beating Anyone’s Legend in what was a very slow and close game for most of it.

Nothing spectacular happened in the match for over 20 minutes, with only three kills on the board at the 24th minute. However, while neither team wanted to risk too much, Karmine Corp showed great things, good decision-making, and surprisingly solid macro.

They eventually got the better of AL with clean teamfights and excellent map movement, outmacroing the Chinese team by executing a very simple plan – don’t get flanked and avoid the wombo-combo.

Great showing from KC and a promising sign for what is to come.

Verdict

LYON v Karmine Corp

LYON bested Team Secret Whales in a very scrappy game, while Karmine Corp played a more methodical match against Anyone’s Legend, whom they slowly ground down. In different ways, both performances were impressive.

Even though LYON showed some good things on day one, Karmine Corp should be favoured. They have looked more versatile, have more games behind them, and have shown excellent macro.

LYON could surprise, but until they show more, KC are the play.
