Invictus Gaming played well in the first round of the tournament, when they put up a fight against Gen.G. Team Secret Whales did not look as potent and were slightly disappointed against LYON, losing a scrappy game.

While IG played better, it is fair to question how big of favourites they should be, especially considering Team Secret Whales are capable of much more than what they showed.

Invictus Gaming Did Not Look Terrible

Invictus Gaming lost their opening match of the tournament against Gen.G, which was a surprisingly competitive game. Early on, a few close skirmishes saw Invictus Gaming pull ahead and secure a nearly 2000 gold lead before the 10-minute mark.

Invictus Gaming continued to gain momentum and looked well on their way to victory. However, Gen.G managed to claw back some of the deficit by taking advantage of some of IG’s small errors and with better map movement.

In the mid-late game, Gen,G pulled ahead with better-executed team fights and by funnelling gold into the right players. Once Gen.G stabilised and took a lead, there was no turning back, as they were simply the better macro team.

Ultimately, Invictus Gaming did not play poorly. But they did get very sloppy in the mid-late game.

Team Secret Whales Have Potential

Team Secret Whales lost their first game of the tournament against LYON, largely due to LYON securing an early lead. They held onto it throughout the game, even though the two teams went back-and-forth with multiple skirmishes.

Team Secret Whales did a fine job trying to claw their way back into the game, but they failed to take control of the match back from LYON, who had a clear plan on how to approach this series.

It was a scrappy game throughout, and while TSW lost, they showed some good things. The match could’ve easily ended the other way had a few situations played out differently.

Verdict

Invictus Gaming v Team Secret Whales

Invictus Gaming had a very promising start to the tournament, playing a competitive game against Gen.G. This is a clear indication of quality and that IG are indeed better than expected.

Team Secret Whales lost to LYON in a very scrappy affair, but that could’ve easily ended the other way. Admittedly, TSW disappointed slightly on the day, but it is hard to judge a team based on one match alone.

Invictus Gaming should be favoured, but not by this much, mainly because I believe Team Secret Whales are much better than what they showed in the first round.
