Italy Chasing 5th Straight Win
Italy have clinched a spot in the second phase, claiming four victories in five matches in Group D and currently holding the leading position.
The start of the qualifiers was quite frustrating for Azzurri, who surprisingly lost at home to Iceland 81-76 but then recovered with back-to-back victories against Lithuania 82-81 and Great Britain 93-57, both on the road.
They didn’t have a lot of problems in their second home appearance, beating Great Britain once again 84-75. Virtus Bologna’s rising star Saliou Niang was the standout performer here with 23 points and seven rebounds.
Italy were light favorites on Thursday against Iceland in Reykjavik and, somewhat surprisingly, won this match quite easily 102-83, with Tommaso Baldasso topping the scoring with 16 points on 7/9 shooting.
Lithuania Chasing Top Spot
Lithuania’s performances in Group D have not been as convincing as expected. Their campaign opened with a dramatic 89-88 victory over Great Britain on the road after completing one of their biggest comebacks in recent years.
That success was followed by disappointing back-to-back defeats, first falling short against Italy 82-81 before suffering another narrow setback against Iceland 86-85.
The Green and Yellows responded well in Round 4 by crushing Iceland 99-82 in front of the home crowd, dominating defensively by forcing 17 turnovers, while Ignas Brazdeikis led the scoring with 27 points.
On Thursday, they had no problems dispatching Great Britain at home 105-85, scoring 59 points in the first half. Veteran Jonas Valančiūnas delivered a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Verdict
With so many stars returning to the roster for these final matches, I view Lithuania as a massive favorite here. Tubelis, Valanciiunas and Brazdeikis should be too much for Italy to handle.
