South Korea Facing a Must-Win Test
South Korea will need to win this final match against the table leaders Japan to advance to the next stage, currently sitting in second place in Group B with a 2-3 record, but holding an inferior head-to-head record against Taiwan.
They had a fantastic start to the qualifiers, claiming two upset victories against China, 80-76 on the road and 90-76 at home, but then lost two games in a row against Taiwan 77-65 and Japan 78-72.
South Korea had a 16-point advantage entering the final quarter against Taiwan on Friday, collapsed completely in the closing minutes and ultimately lost 82-80 in overtime. They had terrible 7/32 shooting from three-point range.
Japan Looking to Maintain Momentum
Japan advanced to the second phase after securing four victories in five rounds in Group B.
After cruising past underdog Taiwan 90-64 in the opening match, the Samurai defeated the same opposition 80-73 as visitors in early December but then slipped in their first true test in the third round against China 87-80.
They returned to winning ways instantly, defeating South Korea 78-72 at home, although it proved harder than initially expected, controlling the boards with a 41-28 rebounding advantage. Josh Hawkinson was named man of the match with 24 points and seven rebounds.
On Friday, Japan pulled off an upset by earning a convincing 92-73 victory over China in Shenyang, dominating the game from start to finish. Hawkinson was the standout performer once again with 27 points.
