Vasco da Gama host Boca Juniors at the Maracana for the second leg of their Copa Sudamericana semi-final, holding a slim advantage after a first-leg victory in Buenos Aires. Both teams have shown strong defensive form, regularly seeing games with under 2.5 goals. Recent results and head-to-head history indicate a tight contest, with Vasco’s defensive solidity and Boca’s struggles on Brazilian soil setting up a tense encounter. The central prediction is under 2.5 goals in this match.

Vasco da Gama vs Boca Juniors Predictions

Vasco da Gama face Boca Juniors at the Maracana in the second leg of their Copa Sudamericana semi-final on Wednesday.

The Brazilians hold a narrow advantage after winning in Buenos Aires and will be satisfied to hold their Argentinian visitors in a low-scoring battle.

Under 2.5 goals is my best bet.

Recent Results Point to Tight Contest

  • Vasco da Gama have seen under 2.5 goals in 5 of their last 6 matches (Copa Sudamericana)
  • Vasco da Gama conceded an average of 0.375 goals per game in their last 8 matches
  • Boca Juniors have seen under 2.5 goals in 5 of their last 7 matches (Copa Sudamericana)
  • Boca Juniors conceded an average of 1.0 goals per game in their last 8 matches

Boca Hold Narrow H2H Advantage

Vasco da Gama and Boca Juniors have met in five competitive fixtures since 2000. Boca claimed two wins while Vasco bagged their first win in last week’s first-leg in Argentina.

Vasco Look to Finish the Job

Vasco return to Rio after a narrow 1-0 defeat at Sao Paulo in a Serie A contest last weekend.

After a goalless first-half, Artur’s strike midway through the second period secured a hard-fought win for the home side.

The visitors had more of the ball and plenty of opportunities to secure a better result at MorumBIS. Vasco controlled possession (60%) and outshot Sao Paulo 13-9, but both teams managed just two efforts on target.

Final xG totals of 1.40 to 1.14 in Sao Paulo’s favour reflected the tight nature of Saturday’s Serie A contest.

Before their setback in Sao Paulo, Vasco had enjoyed a seven-match unbeaten run across all competitions. Pedro Emanuel’s side won five games during that sequence, including a 5-0 home success against Coritiba and last week's impressive win in Argentina.

Defensive discipline has been central to their Copa Sudamericana progress. Vasco beat Santa Fe 2-0 on aggregate in the quarter-finals after a goalless first leg in Colombia, then kept another clean sheet against Boca.

Their last three Sudamericana fixtures saw only three goals scored while they have kept clean sheets in six of eight continental games since May.

Boca Respond Against Talleres

Boca Juniors travel to Brazil after a 2-1 home win against Talleres in the Argentine Primera Division.
Matias Galarza put the visitors ahead, but Miguel Merentiel levelled the contest before Leonel Flores secured the points in the second half.

Rodolfo Arruabarrena's side just about deserved the victory at La Bombonera. Boca controlled possession (51%), outshot Talleres 13-11 and recorded an xG total of 0.92 compared to the visitors' 0.45.

The Argentines had been in excellent form before last week’s first-leg defeat against Vasco. Boca remained unbeaten in 17 previous fixtures.

Competing in the Copa Sudamericana for only the second time, Arruabarrena's men have already had success against Brazilian opposition this season. Boca beat Sao Paulo 2-1 on aggregate in the quarter-finals.

Past performances in Brazil offer little encouragement for Los Xeneizes. Boca are winless in their last 11 competitive matches on Brazilian soil since a 1-0 win at Internacional six years ago.

Vasco da Gama vs Boca Juniors Team News

Vasco da Gama: (4-3-3) Leo Jardim; Puma Rodriguez, Alan Saldivia, Robert Renan, Cuiabano; Santiago Sosa, Thiago Mendes, Alan Lescano; Adson, Bruno Duarte, Marino Hinestroza.

Head coach Emanuel has several selection issues this week. Paulo Henrique is a doubt after coming off against Sao Paulo. Puma Rodriguez is expected to deputise if he fails to recover.

Andres Gomez is suspended following his red card in the first leg. Marino Hinestroza is expected to come into the attack.

Facundo Colidio is ineligible, while Carlos Cuesta, Claudio Spinelli, Cauan Barros, Mateus Carvalho and Nuno Moreira are doubtful to feature.

Boca Juniors: (4-3-3) Alvaro Montero; Leandro Lozano, Lautaro Di Lollo, Facundo Herrera, Lautaro Blanco; Santiago Ascacibar, Leandro Paredes, Milton Delgado; Leonel Flores, Miguel Merentiel, Sebastian Villa.

Boca boss Arruabarrena could make some changes from the side that started the first-leg defeat in Buenos Aires.

Leandro Paredes is in contention to return after missing out last week.

Sebastian Villa is another option to come into the first XI after recovering from an ankle sprain.

Injured trio Agustin Marchesin, Tomas Aranda, Tomas Belmonte and Adam Bareiro remain sidelined.

Verdict

Vasco's recent defensive record and narrow first-leg lead point towards a tense return at the Maracana.

Under 2.5 goals is my preferred pick for Wednesday’s semi-final.
