Czech Republic Under Pressure
The Czech Republic had a great start to this qualifying campaign, beating Sweden 97-80 in front of the home crowd in late November, then justifying the role of slight favorites in Tallinn against Estonia 97-92, where veteran Tomas Satoransky did a sensational job with 18 points and 16 assists.
After getting crushed by Slovenia 99-59 in the third round, the Czechs hosted the same opponent in Jihlava in early March, held a huge 18-point advantage at halftime but then stopped scoring and lost 86-84.
Their first chance to secure a place in the next phase of the FIBA World Cup 2027 qualifiers was wasted on Friday, losing to Sweden 87-76 due to a total collapse in the first half.
Estonia Inpired After Slovenia Win
One of the most dramatic contests of the last decade came in Estonia’s opening match, beating Slovenia 94-93 on the road, then losing at home to the Czech Republic 97-92 before returning to winning ways in the third round against Sweden 88-77.
To secure a spot in the next phase, the Estonians just needed to beat the Scandinavian side once again in front of the home crowd but had terrible shooting numbers and lost 79-69, making just 37% of their field-goal attempts.
That much-anticipated victory finally arrived on Friday in front of the home crowd, beating a weakened Slovenia side convincingly 93-62. Stefan Vaaks dominated the floor with 20 points, seven assists and four rebounds.
