Austria, coming off a heavy 46-point defeat to Poland, is struggling in their group and viewed as the weakest team. In contrast, Latvia is riding high under newly appointed coach Janis Gailtis, making a strong start in the competition. The recommendation is clear: Latvia is expected to achieve a convincing win over Austria, capitalizing on their recent momentum and Austria's current form.

Match Preview

Austria are one of the weakest teams in the European qualifiers and I doubt they can stand against an inspired Latvia side searching for two valuable points before the next phase.

Latvia Building Momentum Under a New Coach

Latvia have been one of the biggest underperformers in the FIBA World Cup 2027 qualifiers so far, claiming just two wins in five matches, which prompted big changes as they sacked head coach Sito Alonso and appointed Janis Gailtis.

After a disappointing opening loss against the Netherlands, the Latvians claimed their only victory at the time against underdog Austria 86-68, but then suffered another defeat to Poland, 84-82, in front of the home crowd.

Latvia locked horns with the Poles in the fourth round, getting crushed 92-72 in Gdynia. Arturs Strautins was their standout performer with 20 points and three rebounds.

Gailtis made his debut on Friday evening, with Latvia beating the Netherlands 72-69 on the road in a dramatic finish. Rihards Lomazs carried them to victory with 21 points and six rebounds.

Austria Hoping to Avoid Another Heavy Defeat

Austria have never made it to the FIBA World Cup in the nation's history and this is hardly going to change in these qualifiers, with the team struggling and sitting in last place in Group F with a 1-4 record.

Their hopes were lowered to a minimum after losing their opening three matches to Poland 90-78, Latvia 86-68 and the Netherlands 81-71.

Their sole victory came in the fourth round, causing a massive upset by defeating the Netherlands 88-87 on the road in Den Haag. Austria shot 51% from the field, while Fynn Schott delivered an outstanding performance with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Austria were humiliated by Poland in front of the home crowd on Friday, losing 123-77 after allowing too many open three-pointers.

Verdict

Austria lost their most recent match against Poland by 46 points and are without a doubt the weakest side in this group. Latvia made a good start under new coach Janis Gailtis, and I will back them to earn a convincing win here.
