Argentina 2026 World Cup Preview - Lautaro Martinez the Spear Head for Reigning Champions

Argentina arrive at the 2026 World Cup as reigning champions and favorites to go deep once again. Having finished top of South American qualifiers, Lionel Scaloni's side boasts a balanced squad featuring Lionel Messi, Lautaro Martinez, and a matured defense. With a favorable group (Algeria, Austria, Jordan), odds are strong for Argentina to at least reach the quarter-finals, though history shows that back-to-back wins are rare. Key players to watch include Emiliano Martinez, Enzo Fernandez, and Lautaro Martinez, who is coming off a top scorer performance at the 2024 Copa America.

Argentina arrive at the 2026 World Cup with a mission to defend their throne. The reigning champions dominated the South American qualifiers and have every chance of going back-to-back.

Under the leadership of Lionel Scaloni, la Albiceleste arrive at the tournament with a hungry and experienced squad led by the iconic Lionel Messi.

World Cup History

Argentina are one of the most successful nations in World Cup history, winning their maiden star on home soil in 1978 when Mario Kempes won the Golden Boot.

Their second title arrived at Mexico 1986, driven by the immortal Diego Maradona who netted the infamous 'Hand of God' goal against England in the quarter-finals.

Their third title came at Qatar 2022 in what is widely considered the greatest World Cup final ever played. Argentina defeated France on penalties following a thrilling 3-3 draw, cementing Lionel Messi’s legacy in the process.

The Road to 2026 - On Top in South America

Argentina navigated their way through the grueling South American qualifiers with ease, finishing on top, nine points clear of Ecuador.

Lionel Messi top scored with eight goals, Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martínez netting four each.

Scaloni's side have won all six friendlies since, scoring 18 goals with just one conceded. They will take on Iceland in Alabama on 10 June.

The Manager - Lionel Scaloni

Lionel Scaloni’s journey is the stuff of legend. Initially appointed as a caretaker in 2018, the inexperienced manager transformed the culture of Argentine football.

He broke a 28-year trophy drought by winning the 2021 Copa America, captured the biggest prize at the 2022 World Cup and won another Copa America title in 2024.

The 48-year-old's success has proved that an ability to foster squad harmony at international level can be more influential than formations and tactics.

The Squad - Top Quality From Top to Bottom

The 2026 Argentine squad is arguably more complete and balanced than the squad that lifted the trophy in Qatar.

Cristian Romero and Lisandro Martinez have had four years of experience in the Premier League and 38-year-old Nicolas Otamendi is set to take part in his final World Cup.
Midfielders Enzo Fernandez and Alexis Mac Allister are coming into their prime with Leandro Paredes and Rodrigo De Paul bringing experience to the centre of the pitch.

There could be some weaknesses in the full-back positions, but there are no such issues up front where Lionel Messi, Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez lead the way.

Players to Watch

Emiliano Martinez: A proven big-match specialist who took home the Golden Glove at the 2022 World Cup, Martinez provides Argentina with psychological steel and an elite penalty saving ability that could play a big role.

Cristian Romero: An uncompromising anchor in the defensive line, Romero's pace complements 38-year-old Nicolas Otamendi who is inching towards to end of his career.

Enzo Fernandez: Fernandez surged to prominence in Qatar, playing an important role in Argentina's success and winning the Young Player Award. His versatility and elite passing ability make him an important part of la Albiceleste's midfield.

Lautaro Martinez: Martinez played an integral role in Inter Milan's Serie A success and is Argentina’s focal point up front. His pressing, work rate and finishing ability makes him an indispensable weapon.

Lionel Messi: Competing in his sixth World Cup, Messi is one of the greatest players of all time and remains Argentina's heartbeat. While he picks and chooses his moments to get involved, they often turn into goals due to his playmaking and shooting ability.

Group J Schedule and Path to the Final

Argentina are in Group J alongside Algeria, Austria and Jordan. Needless to say, they enter the tournament as heavy favourites to top the group and go on a deep run.

Not only are their opponents vastly inferior, the limited travel time between Kansas City and Arlington will help their cause in North America.

DateOpponentVenue
June 16 Algeria Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City
June 22 Austria AT&T Stadium, Arlington
June 27 Jordan AT&T Stadium, Arlington

Winning the group will see la Albiceleste face the Group H runners-up in the Round of 32, the candidates including Uruguay, Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde.

Argentina would then have a relatively easy opponent in the Round of 16 before meeting Portugal or Colombia in the quarter-finals. Staying on that path could set up a semi-final clash against Brazil, Germany or England before a final against Spain or France.

2026 World Cup Winner Odds

Argentina are currently listed around 10/1 to win the World Cup and there will be plenty of punters accepting those odds.

With a comfortabe path to the quarter-finals, those odds are expected to keep coming down.

Verdict

I don't think Argentina will have many problems reaching the quarter-finals. From there anything is possible, but no team has gone back-to-back since Brazil in 1958 and 1962.

Lionel Messi gets most of the attention, but Lautaro Martinez will occupy the striker position and was top scorer at the 2024 Copa America.
