USA 2026 World Cup Preview - Can Mauricio Pochettino Take the Stars and Stripes Deep on Home Soil?
The United States head into the 2026 World Cup as co-hosts, aiming to improve on past underachievement. Under new manager Mauricio Pochettino, the squad features European-based stars like Christian Pulisic, Tyler Adams, and in-form striker Folarin Balogun. Despite expectations of reaching the knockout stage from a manageable group, title odds remain long at 67/1. Pulisic is favored as top scorer, with Balogun close behind. Depth doubts persist, but the revamped lineup and soft Group D draw give the US their best shot in years.
- Expectation is high as the USA enter 2026 World Cup as co-hosts
- Mauricio Pochettino has a strong attack led by Christian Pulisic
- A favourable group draw should be no obstacle to the knockout rounds
The United States enter the 2026 World Cup with pressure to deliver. For decades, the narrative surrounding soccer in America has been one of high potential but disappointing results.
Mauricio Pochettino was brought in to overcome the tactical naivety and take the team to a new level.
Results since his appointment suggest there is a long way to go before the Stars and Stripes can challenge the elite teams in world football.
World Cup History
The United States have experienced everything from early success to a 40 year absence. Their best finish in the modern era came in 2002 when they lost 1-0 to Germany to in the quarter-finals.
In Qatar 2022, the Stars and Stripes got through the group stage unbeaten, drawing with England and Wales before defeating Iran.
They met their match in the Round of 16, suffering a 3-1 defeat to a Netherlands side that went on to reach the semi-finals.

The Road to 2026 - Mixed Results
The United States received automatic entry as co-hosts. They got to the 2025 Gold Cup final in July but couldn't close it out in Texas, going down 2-1 to Mexico.
Friendly results in late 2025 were encouraging, including a 2-0 victory over Japan, 1-1 draw against Ecuador and 5-1 thrashing of Uruguay.
Mauricio Pochettino's side have continued to test themselves against top quality opposition this year, beginning with a 5-2 defeat to Belgium and 2-0 loss against Portugal.
The Stars and Stripes returned to action in Charlotte where Folarin Balogun's late goal secured a 3-2 win against against Senegal. One more friendly is scheduled, against Germany in Chicago on 6 June.
The Manager - Mauricio Pochettino
Following a string of disappointing performances in major tournaments, a statement was made in September 2024 with the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino.
The former Southampton, Tottenham, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea boss represented an upgrade who was tasked with taking the side to new heights.
He is yet to guide the USA to a title, going out to Panama in the CONCACAF Nations League semi-finals and Mexico in the Gold Cup final.
The Squad - Pulisic Leads the Way
Mauricio Pochettino has assembled a dynamic squad with plenty of experience in the top European leagues.
Concerns persist about depth in the goalkeeper and central defensive positions, but there is plenty of flair in attack with Christian Pulisic the primary candidate.

Group D Schedule and Path to the Final
The United States have been given a relatively easy path to the knockout round. Victories against Paraguay and Australia will be expected before ending the group against Turkey.
| Date | Opponent | Venue |
|---|---|---|
| June 12 | Paraguay | SoFi Stadium, Inglewood |
| June 19 | Australia | Lumen Field, Seattle |
| June 25 | Turkey | SoFi Stadium, Inglewood |
Finishing top of Group D would set up a path to the Round of 16 where Belgium are likely to be their opponents.
Second place would see the USA face the Group G runners-up, Egypt the primary contender. Getting through that would set up a Round of 16 clash against the winners of Group H which is expected to be Spain.
2026 World Cup Winner Odds
USA can be backed around 65/1 alongside Uruguay. Few are expecting a run to the final.
