Netherlands 2026 World Cup Preview - Can Oranje Break the Curse?

The Netherlands head to the 2026 World Cup as Group F favorites, boasting a robust defense led by Virgil van Dijk and a talented squad managed by Ronald Koeman. Oranje topped qualifying with ease and feature stars such as Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay, though the latter’s fitness is in question. Bookmakers give the Dutch 21/1 odds to lift the trophy—eighth best—while group odds heavily favor them over Japan, Sweden, and Tunisia. Expect Netherlands to top their group, but their likely knockout route could mean a tough test against Brazil or Morocco.

The Netherlands head to the 2026 World Cup with a strong squad led by the experienced Ronald Koeman.

Backed by an elite defensive unit that features Virgil van Dijk, Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay add class to an Oranje side that is more than capable of going deep at the tournament.

Following three final defeats and a heartbreaking quarter-final exit in 2022, the Netherlands will be desperate to shed their status as the greatest nation to never win the trophy.

World Cup History

No country shares the Netherlands' unique heartbreak at the World Cup. Led by the legendary Johan Cruyff in the 1970s, they fell short in consecutive finals in 1974 and 1978.

They reached the final again in 2010 and lost to Spain in extra time. Oranje got to the semi-finals in 2014, going out in a penalty shootout to Argentina.

In their most recent outing in Qatar 2022, they were knocked out in a dramatic quarter-final against Argentina which has become known as the 'Battle of Lusail'.

Trailing 2-0 with time running out, Louis van Gaal brought on Wout Weghorst who scored two goals to take it to penalties where they fell short once again.

The Road to 2026 - Depay Leads the Way in the Qualifiers

The Dutch qualification campaign was relatively stress free, finishing top of Group G, three points ahead of Poland against whom they drew twice.

Oranje scored 27 goals with four conceded, Memphis Depay scoring eight times with Cody Gakpo and Donyell Malen bagging four each.

Two friendlies were played in March, a 2-1 victory over Norway followed by a 1-1 draw against Ecuador which came after Denzel Dumfries was sent off in the 12th minute.

A shock 1-0 defeat against Algeria in Rotterdam was less than an ideal result before heading to the World Cup. They face Uzbekistan in New York on 8 June.

The Manager - Ronald Koeman

Ronald Koeman is a towering figure in Dutch football, scoring over 200 goals as a defender. He was part of the Netherlands' side that won the 1988 European Championship.

After successfull seasons at Ajax and PSV Eindhoven, he moved to Barcelona to became part of Johan Cruyff's side that won four consecutive La Liga titles.
This is Koeman's second spell in charge of his nation, the first coming from 2018 to 2020 which included a 1-0 defeat against Portugal in the 2019 UEFA Nations League final.

Returning to the helm in 2023 after Louis van Gaal's departure, Koeman has maintained a fluid 4-3-3 system inspired by Johan Cruyff.

The Squad - World Class Spine

Ronald Koeman's squad features 15 players who compete in the English Premier League. Seven of the eight defenders currently play in the EPL.

The Netherlands' strength lies in defence. The presence of Virgil van Dijk dominates the centre-back position with Micky van de Ven and Jan Paul van Hecke heirs to his throne.
The midfield remains technically gifted, orchestrated by Frenkie de Jong and complimented with Ryan Gravenberch and Tijjani Reijnders.

There are some weaknesses up front with Memphis Depay attempting to regain fitness following an injury. Cody Gakpo and Donyell Malen are set to feature heavily in attack.

Players to Watch

Virgil van Dijk: The towering captain remains the spiritual and defensive heartbeat of the team. At 34-years-old, his leadership, aerial dominance and organisation will be vital.
Frenkie de Jong: The Barcelona midfielder has the ability to cover a lot of ground, break up opposition attacks and bypass opposition presses with the ball. He is an essential piece for Ronald Koeman's side.

Memphis Depay: As the Netherlands' all-time top goalscorer, Depay provides clinical finishing and veteran leadership in the final third. Despite recent battles with a thigh injury, he has a unique ability to spearhead the attack.

Group F Schedule and Path to the Final

The Netherlands have been drawn in Group F where they begin against Japan in Arlington. They face Sweden in Houston before ending against Tunisia in Kansas City where the team is based.

DateOpponentVenue
June 14 Japan AT&T Stadium, Arlington
June 20 Sweden NRG Stadium, Houston
June 25 Tunisia Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City

Topping the group will see Ronald Koeman's side face the Group C runners-up - likely to be Brazil or Morocco. They would then have a winnable match in the Round of 16 before facing a group winner in the quarter-finals, possible Germany or France.

Finishing second in the group would set up a Round of 32 match against the winners of Group C, once again Brazil or Morocco. That path would be likely to result in a quarter-final against England or Croatia.

Verdict

The Netherlands are a fascinating prospect at the World Cup. They have the capability to upset Brazil or Morocco in the Round of 32 and go on a deep run.

I am backing Oranje to top Group F with Sweden to take second spot.
