South Korea 2026 World Cup Preview - Can Heung-min Son Lead the Taegeuk Warriors to Glory?
South Korea enters the 2026 World Cup as one of Asia’s top teams, boasting an impressive record of 11 consecutive tournament qualifications. Led by star forward Son Heung-min and legendary manager Hong Myung-bo, the squad blends experience and emerging talent. Drawn into Group A with Mexico, Czechia, and South Africa, bookmakers see them as outsiders (500/1 odds) for the title, but strong leadership and key players could see them progress beyond the Round of 16 for the first time since 2002.

World Cup History
South Korea holds the record for the most World Cup appearances by an Asian nation. They went on a giant killing run on home soil in 2002, knocking out Italy and Spain before a narrow 1-0 semi-final defeat against Germany.

The Path to 2026 - Flawless Qualification and Friendly Defeats
South Korea’s qualification for their 11th consecutive tournament was dominant. They finished the Asian qualifiers unbeaten, recording 11 wins and 5 draws.
They conceded only eight goals throughout the cycle, topping Group B in the final round, comfortably ahead of Jordan and Iraq.
Doubts arose after two friendly defeats in March, beaten 4-0 by Ivory Coast and 1-0 by Austria. Their first friendly before the big dance ended in a dominant 5-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago, Son Heung-Min scoring the opening two goals.
Their final friendly will come against El Salvador in Utah on 3 June.
The Manager - Hong Myung-bo
Hong Myung-bo, a legendary former captain and the man who led Ulsan HD to back-to-back K League titles, returned to the national helm in July 2024.
He previously managed South Korea at the 2014 World Cup, the Taegeuk Warriors unable to win a game and exiting in the group stage.
- History: Hong is a national icon, having won the Bronze Ball at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, awarded to the tournament's third-best player.
- Tactics: He favours a pragmatic 3-4-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation, focusing on defensive stability.
The Squad - Heung-min Son Leads the Way
The 2026 squad is dominated by Heung-min Son, the former Tottenham forward who is flourishing for LA Galaxy.
There is plenty of experience in the ranks with six players earning 70+ caps.

Players to Watch
- Kim Min-jae: The Bayern Munich centre-back is the rock in defence and will have to be at his best to guide South Korea through the knockout rounds.
- Hwang In-beom: The midfielder dictates the tempo and links the defense to the attacking trio.
- Lee Kang-in: The creative winger is part of PSG's squad, delivers deadly set-pieces and is capable of opening up opposition defences.
- Son Heung-min: At 33, this could be his fourth and final World Cup. His leadership and clinical finishing remain vital.
Group A Schedule and the Path to the Final
South Korea has been drawn in Group A alongside co-hosts Mexico, Czechia and South Africa. They will play all three group games in Mexico.
| Date | Opponent | Location |
|---|---|---|
| June 11 | Czechia | Estadio Akron, Zapopan |
| June 18 | Mexico | Estadio Akron, Zapopan |
| June 24 | South Africa | Estadio BBVA, Guadalupe |
If South Korea wins Group A, they will stay in Mexico for a Round of 32 clash against a third-placed qualifier. A victory in that match there would set up a Round of 16 match against England or Croatia in Mexico City.
Finishing second in the group would see the Taegeuk Warriors travel to Los Angeles to face the runners-up in Group B which contains Canada, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Switzerland.
