England heads to the 2026 World Cup in North America determined to end their 60-year trophy drought, now guided by manager Thomas Tuchel. The squad features notable absences—Maguire, Foden, and Alexander-Arnold dropped in favor of tactical trust, with nine players set for their senior tournament debuts. Facing Croatia, Ghana, and Panama in Group L, England is the third favorite to win the World Cup (7.00 odds), and Harry Kane is tipped as a top Golden Boot contender. A strong campaign is expected, but their path includes potential clashes with Brazil or Spain.

  • England had a perfect qualification under Thomas Tuchel
  • The manager has made bold squad choices for the 2026 World Cup
  • The Three Lions are third favourites in the winner market

England's 60 year wait for World Cup glory has a chance to finally come to an end in 2026. For decades, the narrative surrounding the Three Lions has been golden generations failing to live up to the hype.

As the betting markets sharpen their focus on the World Cup, England are third in the winner market. Questions remain about their ability to move past historical curses that have existed since 1966.

World Cup History

England have experienced everything from ultimate glory to heartbreaking penalty-shootout exits. They took the lead against Croatia in the 2018 semi-finals before going out in extra time.

The Three Lions met France in the quarter-finals in Qatar, Harry Kane's penalty making it 1-1 before they went on to lose 2-1 in Al Khor.

The Road to 2026 - Perfect Qualification

England punched their ticket to North America with uthority. Competing in Group K, the team put together a masterclass in efficient football.

The Three Lions won all eight qualifiers, comfortably finishing above Albania and Serbia. Thomas Tuchel's side scored 22 goals without being breached, Harry Kane fiinding the net eight times, five ahead of Eberechi Eze.

Two friendlies in March failed to deliver results, a 1-1 draw against Uruguay followed by a 1-0 defeat to Japan. Two more warm up matches will be played in Florida, against New Zealand and Costa Rica.

The Manager - Thomas Tuchel

Following the departure of Gareth Southgate, the Football Association turned to German manager Thomas Tuchel to guide the national team.

Tuchel is an elite strategist with a Champions League title at Chelsea and domestic titles with Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. He is known for his tactical flexibility and focus on team chemistry over individual star power.

The Squad - Tuchel Springs Some Surprises

Thomas Tuchel has ruthlessly prioritised tactical trust over past reputations, shocking fans by leaving Harry Maguire, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Phil Foden and Cole Palmer out of his World Cup squad.

Senior tournament debuts have been given to nine players including Djed Spence, Morgan Rogers, Nico O'Reilly and Ivan Toney. Veterans leadership comes from Jordan Henderson and Harry Kane.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Jordan Pickford; Reece James, John Stones, Marc Guehi, Nico O'Reilly; Declan Rice, Elliot Anderson; Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham, Marcus Rashford; Harry Kane

Players to Watch

John Stones: The defensive anchor and primary distributor from the back. With a younger defensive line surrounding him, Stones' experience and ability to read the game is crucial but questions surround his fitness.

Declan Rice: Rice is an elite midfielder who can disrupt opposition counter attacks and dictate transitional play. His calmness on and off the ball gives the creative stars the license to dominate.

Jude Bellingham: With Foden and Palmer left out, Bellingham possesses positional freedom as the creative hub needed to unlock world-class opposition.

Bukayo Saka: A relentless creative spark on the right wing. Saka’s tactical consistency and direct dribbling make him the first name on the team sheet out wide.

Harry Kane: The veteran captain and England's all-time top scorer leads the line, rapidly closing in on Peter Shilton's record for most appearances. His elite hold-up play and clinical finishing remain foundational to England’s World Cup dreams.

Group L Schedule and Path to the Final

England have a tricky start in Group L, taking on a Croatian side that knocked them out in 2018. Easier assignments follow against Ghana and Panama.

DateOpponentVenue
June 17 Croatia AT&T Stadium, Arlington
June 23 Ghana Gillette Stadium, Foxborough
June 27 Panama MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford

Topping Group L would set the Three Lions on a path to a Round of 16 clash in Mexico City, likely to be against Mexico or Switzerland. That route could lead to a quarter-final clash against Brazil or Morocco.

Finishing second in the group would see England face Colombia or Portgual in the Round of 32 followed by a Round of 16 match against Spain.

Group L - Reverse Forecast Betting Odds

England are short priced favourites to win Group L but I don't think Croatia will be an easy opponent in their opening game.

Those two teams are clearly stronger than Ghana and Panama which brings the reverse forecast market in play.

Kane Aiming for Second Golden Boot

Harry Kane sits second on the top goalscorer betting market, the striker finishing top in 2018 with six goals. He scored just two goals in Qatar, six behind Kylian Mbappe.

Verdict

England and Croatia should occupy the top two spots in Group L. Winning the group is key as finishing second is likely to set up a Round of 16 clash against Spain.

Harry Kane is arguably the best striker in the world and top scored at the 2018 World Cup. He scored 61 goals for Bayern Munich this season and should be able to punish Ghana and Panama.
