After missing out on Qatar 2022, Colombia enter the 2026 World Cup with a point to prove. Led by 2014 Golden Boot winner James Rodriguez, they are an unpredicatable side that could do plenty of damage in the knockout rounds.

Having narrowly lost to Argentina in the 2024 Copa America final and featuring Luis Diaz out wide, Nestor Lorenzo's side are an interesting dark horse that are ranked 11th in the outright winner market.

World Cup History

Colombia have qualified for the World Cup on seven occasions, their peak coming at Brazil 2014.

Spearheaded by a young James Rodriguez who claimed the Golden Boot with six goals, Los Cafeteros won all three group games and beat Uruguay 2-0 in the Round of 16. They suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to the hosts in the quarter-finals.

Their last appearance in 2018 ended in a penalty shootout defeat to England in the Round of 16.

The Manager - Nestor Lorenzo

Lorenzo is a former defender who represented Argentina on 13 occasions. He was Jose Pekerman's assistant from 2004 to 2019, helping to mastermind Colombia's 2014 and 2018 World Cup campaigns.
The 60-year-old guided Peruvian club Melgar to the 2022 Apertura title before taking charge of Colombia in July 2022.

He went on a long unbeaten streak that ended in a 1-0 defeat to Argentina in the 2024 Copa America final.

Colombia’s squad features a strong central defence led by Jhon Lucumi and Davinson Sanchez. Richard Rios is the leader in midfield with James Rodriguez a wildcard in the playmaker position.

Luis Diaz is a devastating winger and with Luis Suarez up front, there is no shortage of goal scoring threat.

Players to Watch

Jhon Lucumi: The anchor of the defence, Lucumi's partnership with Davinson Sanchez will be pivotal to keeping clean sheets against top-tier nations.

Richard Rios: Rios will be a crucial anchor for Colombia due to his versatility as a box-to-box midfielder.

James Rodriguez: The veteran 34-year-old playmaker won the Golden Boot at the 2014 World Cup and is the emotional heartbeat of the team.

He may no longer possess the stamina to last 90 minutes but his his elite vision, defense-splitting passing and dead-ball delivery remain world-class.
Luis Diaz: Diaz is the star player in Colombia’s attack, operating from the left wing and scoring plenty of goals.

Luis Suarez: The striker has been sensational since moving to Sporting CP, scoring 38 goals for the Portuguese club. His lethal finishing, strength and pace offers Los Cafeteros a focal point in attack.

Group K Schedule and Path to the Final

Colombia have been drawn into Group K, their first two matches being played in Mexico against Uzbekistan and DR Congo. The group stage ends with a block-buster clash against Portugal in Miami.

June 17 Uzbekistan Estadio Azteca, Mexico City

If Nestor Lorenzo's side win the group they will meet a third placed team before a Round of 16 match against the winners of Group B, expected to be Switzerland or Canada. Staying on that path could set up a quarter-final clash against Argentina.

If Colombia finishing second in the group, a tough Round of 32 match is likely to come against England or Croatia. Spain are set to be awaiting in the Round of 16.

Verdict

Luis Diaz is likely to play plenty of minutes and top the scoring for Colombia, but there is little value available on the winger.

I think there is too much uncertainty surrounding Colombia at the World Cup. They should be far too good in their opening two matches which is what I will be targeting, followed by BTTS against Portugal.
