Bosnia and Herzegovina return to the FIFA World Cup in 2026, marking a milestone since gaining independence. Under the inspiring guidance of Sergej Barbarez, the resilient squad—with veteran Edin Dzeko leading the attack—stunned favorites Italy and Wales in dramatic playoffs. Although their chances of winning are slim at 251/1, their youthful, ambitious roster gives hope for progression out of Group B, facing Canada, Switzerland, and Qatar. The campaign is a symbolic celebration of national pride and footballing resurgence.

For Bosnia and Herzegovina, the 2026 World Cup is more than just a tournament, it is a chance to celebrate independence. A part of the Yugoslavia until 1992, this will be their second appearance.

The current cycle has seen a resurgence under the emotional leadership of national icon Sergej Barbarez. The Dragons qualified in dramatic fashion after getting through two penalty shootouts in the playoffs.

With the legendary Edin Dzeko preparing for a final curtain call, they arrive in North America with a decent chance to get out of the group stage.

World Cup History

Bosnia history on the world stage is brief, competing at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil where they began with narrow defeats to Argentina and Nigeria.

Edin Dzeko, Miralem Pjanic and Avdija Vrsajevic scored to secure a 3-1 victory against Iran in their final match, but it wasn't enough to reach the knockout rounds.

The Road to 2026 - Playoff Drama

Bosnia’s path to the 2026 World Cup was nothing short of dramatic. Competing in Group H, they lost just once and finished as runners-up to Austria.

The final game was in Vienna where Haris Tabakovic put them ahead. They were held to a 1-1 draw but got a second chance in the playoffs.

Sergej Barbarez saw his side overcome Wales in Cardiff, Edin Dzeko equalising in the 86th minute before winning a penalty shootout.

Five days later they faced four-time champions Italy in Zenica. Another late equalsier came through Haris Tabakovic, Bosnia converting all four penalties to win another shootout.

Two friendlies are scheduled before the World Cup, the first ending in a 0-0 draw against North Macedonia in Sarajevo. They will face Panama in St. Louis on 6 June.

The Manager - Sergej Barbarez

Sergej Barbarez is one of the most beloved players in the country’s history. He made his international debut in 1998, going on to score 17 goals in 47 appearances and captaining the team between 2004 and 2006.

Despite having no prior senior managerial experience, Barbarez was appointed in early 2024 and failed to win in the Nations League. The six game streak including heavy defeats in the Netherlands (5-2) and Germany (7-0).

Persistence paid off with the historic World Cup qualification run. He implemented a 4-4-2 system featuring Edin Dzeko and Ermedin Demirovic as a twin strike force.

Barbarez successfully convinced dual-national talents to commit to the Dragons including Dzenis Burnic, Ermin Mahmic and Esmir Bajraktarevic.

The Squad - Built for the Future

The 2026 squad lacks experience, just three outfield players over 30-years-old. Only one player has scored more than four international goals, Edin Dzeko.

Players to Watch

Sead Kolasinac: "The Tank" provides the aggression and veteran presence needed in the defensive line.

Amir Hadziahmetovic: The experienced midfielder has earned 34 caps. He is recovering from a knee injury sustained while playing for Hull City but has been included in the squad.

Esmir Bajraktarevic: The 21-year-old winger ended the season strong for Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven and will provide a threath from the right flank.

Ermedin Demirovic: The heir to Dzeko’s throne, his work rate and ability to create space make him the engine of the attack. He has registered 32 goals and 11 assists in 85 appearances for Stuttgart.

Edin Dzeko: At 40-years-old, the "Bosnian Diamond" remains the focal point due to his irreplaceable positioning, leadership and clinical finishing ability.

Dzeko has the most appearances and goals for his nation, scoring 73 goals in 148 matches. He recently helped Schalke achieve promotion back to the Bundesliga.

Group B Schedule and Path to the Final

Bosnia and Herzegovina start their campaign in Toronto against co-hosts Canada. They then face heavyweights Switzerland in Los Angeles before ending the group against Qatar in Seattle.

DateOpponentVenue
June 12 Canada BMO Field, Toronto
June 18 Switzerland SoFi Stadium, Inglewood
June 24 Qatar Lumen Field, Seattle

Topping Group B would see Bosnia go back to Canada and face a third-placed qualifier. Finishing second would mean a return to Los Angeles against the runners-up in Group A, likely South Korea or Czech Republic.

There is another possibility as one of the third placed qualifiers which would set up a difficult match against the winner of Group D or Group E.

2026 World Cup Winner Odds

Bosnia and Herzegovina's chances of winning the World Cup are next to none, currently 250/1 alongside Scotland.

Verdict

Bosnia and Herzegovina have improved significantly under Sergej Barbarez and will be galvanised after an amazing qualification campaign. I think they can get out of a weak group but will fall at the first hurdle.
