For the first time since 1998, Scotland is back at the World Cup, qualifying for the 2026 tournament under manager Steve Clarke. The Tartan Army aims to make history by advancing beyond the group stage, a feat they've never achieved. The squad features seasoned leaders like Andy Robertson, rising stars such as Scott McTominay and Lewis Ferguson, and an in-form Lawrence Shankland. Scotland's group includes Haiti, Morocco, and Brazil, with second place as a realistic target. While outright victory is highly unlikely (251/1 odds), fans and bookmakers expect them to at least reach the round of 32.

For the first time since 1998, the Tartan Army wll descend upon a World Cup. After nearly three decades of failures and narrow misses, Scotland’s qualification in 2026 represents a shift in the nation’s footballing stature.

Under the steady, pragmatic hand of Steve Clarke, Scotland have evolved from a team that feared the big stage to a disciplined and modern outfit.

Armed with a midfield led by Scott McTominay and spearheaded by a supremely confident Lawrence Shankland, the mission is to progress past the group stage for the first time.

World Cup History

Scotland have qualified eight times but never progressed to the knockout rounds, falling agonisingly short on goal difference in 1974 when they went undefeated.

The Road to 2026 - Scots Leave it Late

Scotland’s journey to 2026 was defined by Hampden Park heroics. Competing in Group C, they secured automatic qualification in the most dramatic fashion imaginable.

Heading into the final matchday against Denmark, they needed a win to jump above the Danes into top spot.

Tied 2-2 going into added time, Kieran Tierney and Kenny McLean scored late goals to secure a 4-2 victory and send Hampden Park into a frenzy.

The Manager - Steve Clarke

Since his appointment in 2019, Steve Clarke ended the 23-year wait for a major tournament by qualifying for Euro 2020 and followed it up with Euro 2024.

His greatest achievement has been qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

Clarke is a master of the mid-block and typically utilises a 3-4-2-1 or a 4-2-3-1 that emphasizes defensive solidity and utilises his midfielders to hit teams on the break.

The Squad - Premier League Connection

The 2026 World Cup squad is arguably Scotland's most balanced in history, featuring a core of players competing at the highest levels in England and Italy. Veteran goalkeeper Craig Gordon is included at 43-years-old.

Captained by Andrew Robertson, the Liverpool defender is joined by Premier League hardened Nathan Patterson, John McGinn and Ryan Christie. Manchester United teenager Tyler Fletcher was called up to replace the injured Billy Gilmour.

Scott McTominay has been improving under Antonio Conte's mentorship at Napoli, Lewis Ferguson is thriving at Bologna and Lawrence Shankland has been in fine form for Hearts.

Alongside established stars, the squad also includes exciting wingers like 19-year-old winger Findlay Curtis and 20-year-old Ben Gannon-Doak.

Clarke spoke about Curtis after announcing the squad: "Impressed with him when I brought him into the camp in March. He fitted in very well.

"He's got something a little bit different to what we've got. He's also shown that he can score a goal or two in a Kilmarnock team that was struggling down the bottom of the league."

Players to Watch

Andy Robertson: The leader and heartbeat of the team. His delivery from the left and big game experience at Liverpool are indispensable.

Lewis Ferguson: Ferguson has become a world-class box-to-box threat since moving from Aberdeen to Bologna in 2022.

Scott McTominay: Scotland's clutch player. McTominay's transformation into a goal scorer has been vital, netting 13 goals for Napoli this season.

John McGinn: "Super John McGinn" provides the grit and ball retention. His ability to shield the ball and win fouls in the final third is Scotland's primary release valve under pressure.

Lawrence Shankland: Shankland led Hearts to an unlikely Premiership challenge before earning a big money move to Rangers. The striker scored two goals in Scotland's 4-0 friendly win against Curacao and is set to play a big role at the World Cup.

Group C Schedule and Round of 32 Opponents

Scotland start their campaign against Haiti and remain in Boston to face Morocco. They end with a tough task against Brazil in Miami.

DateOpponentVenue
June 13 Haiti Gillette Stadium, Foxborough
June 19 Morocco Gillette Stadium, Foxborough
June 24 Brazil Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens

With Brazil huge favourites to top Group C, Scotland can target a second placed finish. That would set up a clash against the winner of Group F in Mexico, likely to be the Netherlands or Sweden.

Finishing as one of the eighth best third placed teams would pit them against another group winner, Mexico, Germany and France the possible opponents.

2026 World Cup Winner Odds

Scotland will be thrilled to get out of the group stage but winning the World Cup is an unrealistic target. They can be backed at 250/1 alongside Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Shankland Moves Into Contention

Scott McTominay has become the leader of the Scottish side, scoring two goals in the qualifiers alongside Che Adams and Ryan Christie.

Lawrence Shankland was a big reason for Hearts' success in the Scottish Premiership, scored twice in Scotland's victory over Curacao and will be a popular pick.

Verdict

Scotland open their 2026 World Cup campaign against Haiti which could send them on their way to the round of 32.

Assuming Brazil finish top, it could be a difficult task for the Scots to beat a group winner.

Lawrence Shankland has been a late bloomer, the 30-year-old earning a move to Rangers after an impressive season at Hearts. Steve Clarke is likely to give him plenty of minutes up front.
