Switzerland heads into their sixth consecutive World Cup as Group B favorites, thanks to a transformed, experienced squad led by Granit Xhaka and Breel Embolo. Under coach Murat Yakin, the Swiss have shown strong defensive precision and are expected to advance from their group, facing Qatar, Bosnia & Herzegovina, and co-hosts Canada. Despite odds of 81.00 to win the tournament, Switzerland is seen as a consistent threat with capable leaders and a solid backbone. Embolo is tipped to be their top goalscorer. The team's maturity, grit, and tactical discipline suggest another Round of 16 or quarter-final appearance.

Switzerland have undergone a transformation over the last decade and will be competing in their sixth straight World Cup.

After reaching the last two European Championship quarter-finals, hopes are high for a prolonged run in 2026.

World Cup History

Switzerland have qualified for the past five World Cups, knocked out in the Round of 16 on four occasions.

Their best performances remain three quarter-final exits, the latest on home soil in 1954.

The Road to 2026 - Swiss Precision

Switzerland secured their ticket to the World Cup as Group B winners, finishing above Kosovo, Slovenia and Sweden after registering four wins and two draws.

The campaign was defined by a strong defensive record, conceding just twice. Breel Embolo scored four goals with Johan Manzambi, Granit Xhaka and Dan Ndoye netting twice.

The Swiss side suffered a 4-3 friendly defeat to Germany in March before earning a 0-0 draw against Norway. They got back to winning ways with a 4-1 victory over Jordan, Breel Embolo opening the scoring from the penalty spot.

There is one final friendly before the World Cup, against Australia in San Diego on 6 June.

The Manager - Murat Yakin

Since taking charge in August 2021, Murat Yakin has led Switzerland at two competitions. The first came at the 2022 World Cup where they were thrashed 6-1 by Portugal in the Round of 16.

They went deeper at Euro 2024, defeating Italy in the Round of 16 before a penalty shootout defeat to England in the quarter-finals.

A former central defender with 49 caps, Yakin has infused the team with a flexible tactical identity that can shift between a back three and a back four.

The Squad - Experienced Campaigners

The Swiss squad features ten players with 50+ caps, led by Granit Xhaka who has represented his country 145 times.

Players to Watch

Gregor Kobel: Taking over from the legendary Yann Sommer, the Borussia Dortmund shot-stopper is a calming presence in goal.

Manuel Akanji: The centre-back had a successful spell at Manchester City before moving to Inter Milan, winning league titles at both clubs. His partnership with Nico Elvedi is vital.

Granit Xhaka: The record caps holder and heartbeat of the side, his elite distribution and leadership have been on display for Sunderland this season.
Johan Manzambi: The midfielder has been a revelation at Freiburg, playing a big role in the club reaching the Europa League final. At just 20-years-old, he could be one of the break out stars at the World Cup.

Breel Embolo: A strong striker who has battled injuries throughout his career, the 27-year-old has scored 24 goals in 86 internationals.

Group B Schedule and Path to the Final

Switzerland have a great chance to get off to a winning start in San Francisco where they face Qatar. They then take on Bosnia and Herzegovina before meeting co-hosts Canada in Vancouver.

DateOpponentVenue
June 13 Qatar Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara
June 18 Bosnia and Herzegovina SoFi Stadium, Inglewood
June 24 Canada BC Place, Vancouver

Finishing top of Group B will see Swiss side stay in Vancouver and meet a third-placed qualifier. A second placed finish would see Switzerland return to Inglewood in a clash against the runners-up in Group A.

Murat Yakin's side could get through as one of the third placed qualifiers, setting up a match against the winner of Group D or Group E.

2026 World Cup Winner Odds - Swiss are Outsiders

Switzerland are given little chance of going all the way, currently listed at odds of 80/1 alongside Mexico, Turkey and Croatia.

Embolo the Focal Point Up Front

Breel Embolo is a clear favourite followed by Dan Ndoye, Ruben Vargas and Granit Xhaka.

Embolo scored ten goals for Rennes this season, Vargas scoring three goals for Sevilla and Ndoye netting twice for Nottingham Forest.

Verdict

Switzerland have the best strongest squad in Group B and benefit from a convenient draw. They should be well placed to finish top when they face Canada on the final matchday.

Breel Embolo led the way in the qualifiers, scoring four goals in six matches. With nine goals in his previous 12 internationals, the striker is a logical choice to finish as top goalscorer.
