Following a disappointing defeat to Estonia, Slovenia looks ready for a turnaround in their next game against Sweden. Leveraging their superior experience, playing at home, and an impressive past record versus Sweden, Slovenia is expected to bounce back strongly and should not be considered underdogs. The key recommendation is to back Slovenia due to these advantages, as a positive response is anticipated after the recent setback.

Match Preview

This match carries massive importance for both sides, with Sweden searching for a win to reach the next phase, while Slovenia are in a similar position. The Dragons were victorious in the first head-to-head meeting in early December.

Slovenia Looking to Bounce Back

Even without their NBA star Luka Doncic, Slovenia are doing a solid job in these qualifiers, currently sharing 1st place in Group H with three victories and two defeats.

After losing the opener to Estonia, the Dragons returned to winning ways instantly by defeating Sweden 94-83, and then crushing the Czech Republic 99-59 at home, where Žiga Samar dominated the floor with 19 points and seven assists.

Slovenia then traveled to Jihlava to face the Czechs once again and extended their winning streak with an 86-84 victory after making a huge comeback in the second half (they were behind by 18 points at the break). Veteran Klemen Prepelič was the key performer with 20 points; however, he won’t be available for this match.

That winning streak came to an end on Friday in Tallinn, where Slovenia lost to Estonia for the second time in these qualifiers, 93-62, while shooting just 35% from the field.

Sweden Still in the Race

Sweden’s results and performances have been far from ideal in the FIBA World Cup 2027 qualifiers, but they still hold a chance to advance, currently sitting in last place in Group H with a 2-3 record.

They were nowhere close to forcing an upset in the opening three rounds, recording back-to-back defeats against the Czech Republic 97-80 on the road, plus home defeats to Slovenia 94-83 and Estonia 88-77.

What kept them in the race was a somewhat unexpected 79-69 road victory against Estonia in early March, winning the last quarter 28-14 to complete the comeback. Ludde Håkanson was named man of the match with 18 points.

On Friday, the Swedes made it two wins in a row with a very strong performance at home against the Czech Republic, winning 87-76 in a true team effort with five players scoring in double figures.

Verdict

Slovenia had a disastrous showing against Estonia on Friday and I expect a quick reaction. Experience, home-court advantage and a good head-to-head record against Sweden suggest they should not be underdogs here.
