Taiwan were so close to winning a medal in the previous two Asian Games, finishing 4th both in Jakarta 2018 and Hangzhou 2023.

Their performances in the group stages were solid, starting with an 83-80 upset victory against favored Jordan, but then failing to justify the role of favorites against Iran, losing 72-69.

In the final round, Taiwan locked horns with Qatar, built a 14-point advantage in the first quarter and never let go, winning 91-69 to secure a spot in the playoffs.

Japan Coming off a Disappointing Loss

Japan showed a lot of weak spots in the group stages, which they started with back-to-back victories against Indonesia 98-53 and Saudi Arabia 86-80, clinching a spot in the quarterfinals after just two rounds.

The Samurai were tagged favorites in the final clash against South Korea but lacked defensive discipline, losing convincingly 100-83.

Japan finished the previous Asian Games in 8th place, while their last major achievement was the FIBA Asian Cup gold medal in 1971.
