Combination Bet Betting Term Meaning

The betting term ‘combination bet’ refers to a wager that is made up of more than one type of bet. Round Robins, Trixies, Patents, Canadians and Yankees are different types of combination bets available to punters.

Some bookmakers and betting terminology glossaries incorrectly class accumulators as a type of combination bet as they involve more than one bet selection. The reason this is inaccurate is because a true combination bet consists of different bet types such as singles, doubles and trebles. An accumulator is a single-wager bet, therefore, it is part of a combination bet, but not one in itself.

Combination bets, also known as system bets, are a favoured betting option for many regular horse racing and football punters, although they can be used on any sport and market. As these bets contain multiple selections and combine different bet types, it reduces the risk of losing your entire stake.

For instance, a Lucky 15 combination bet is a 4-selection wager composed of 4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles and 1 four-fold accumulator. You only need one selection to be correct in order to receive a return on the bet (although this might not mean you are in profit).

Examples of Combination Bets

A ‘Goliath’ bet is one of the largest combination bets you can place. It involves eight selections and 237 individual bets: 28 doubles, 56 trebles, 70 four-folds, 56 five-folds, 28 six-folds, 8 seven-folds, and an eight-fold accumulator.

As there are no singles, punters need a minimum of two selections to win to receive a return. Two of the most popular combination bets are Trixies and Yankees. We’ve explained both in greater detail below:

Trixie Combination Bet

A Trixie bet consists of three selections, covering four individual bets: 3 doubles and 1 treble.

Punters will often have at least one selection that is a longshot. In our example, we’ve chosen Stan Wawrinka to win the French Open. If all of the other selections win and Stan doesn’t, we would lose 50p from our £11 stake, but look at the returns if our longshot comes good. This is the appeal of combination bets.
