Super Yankee Betting Term Meaning
A Super Yankee, sometimes called a Canadian bet, is a combination wager made up of 26 individual bets across five selections.
The 26 bets are comprised of 10 doubles, 10 trebles, 5 four-folds, and 1 five-fold accumulator. Rumour has it that the name came about after an American soldier placed this bet and won big when all five selections came out on top.
How to place a Super Yankee bet
Combination bets like a Super Yankee can get quite confusing, so to make things easier to understand we’re going to lay out an example using some matches from the English Championship. First, you have to pick your five selections from your chosen sportsbook:
Blackburn to win vs Preston
Sheffield Utd to win vs Rotherham
Middlesborough to win vs Brentford
Nottingham Forest to win vs Hull
West Brom to win vs Ipswich
Next, click the ‘system bets’ or ‘combinations’ option on your bets slip (this can vary depending on what platform you’re using) and select the ‘Super Yankee’.
Because each bet has an equal impact on the return, it doesn’t matter about the order you add the selections in. The Super Yankee bet will then be calculated as follows, where ‘1x2’ means bet no. 1 plus bet no. 2; Blackburn to win and Sheffield Utd to win, and so on.
Doubles (10 bets)
1x2, 1x3, 1x4, 1x5, 2x3, 2x4, 2x5, 3x4, 3x5, 4x5
Trebles (10 bets)
1x2x3, 1x2x4, 1x2x5, 1x3x4, 1x3x5, 1x4x5, 2x3x4, 2x3x5, 2x4x5, 3x4x5
Four-folds (5 bets)
1x2x3x4, 1x2x3x5, 1x2x4x5, 1x3x4x5, 2x3x4x5
Five-fold (1 bet)
The amount you stake is optional, but you must consider that there are 26 bets in action, so a stake of £1 per bet results in the total wager costing £26.
Calculating a Super Yankee bet payout
With combination bets such as these, it’s always advisable to use an online Super Yankee bet calculator to run a few simulations and see how losses could affect your returns. That being said, it is useful to know how the payouts are calculated, so here’s a quick run-down.
These are the combined returns for each of the separate bet categories:
Total return from 10 doubles: £37.59
Total return from 10 trebles: £70.67
Total return from 5 four-folds: £65.05
Total return from 1 five-fold: £23.45
Adding up those four totals means that you would receive £196.76 from your £1 per bet. (£26 total stake)
Why place a Super Yankee bet?
The way that the Super Yankee bets are composed means that you’ll see a return if any two of your five selections are winners. In our example, if only Blackburn and Middlesborough won (selection 1 and selection 3), you would receive £6.33.
This is an overall loss, as you had to invest £26 initially. Three out of five winners, for example, Blackburn, Middlesborough, and Nottingham, would get you a £3.64 profit using the odds published.
The profit increases greatly as the number of wins increases, but a single loss can massively reduce your payout. For this reason, some punters may opt for a Lucky 31 bet, which is the same as a Super Yankee except the five selections are also backed as singles.
