First Four Betting Term Meaning

First Four betting is an exotic bet type in racing that requires bettors to select runners that finish 1st, 2nd 3rd and 4th. It is very similar to a Trifecta which requires bettors to select runners that finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

First Four bets can provide huge wins due to the difficulty in predicting the first four runners in a race. There are four main types of First Fours bets - Straight First Four, Boxed First Four, Standout First Four and Flexi First.

Straight First Four


A Straight First Four is the simplest and cheapest type of the bet but also the hardest to win. Simply select one runners to finish 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in that order. To be successful the runners need to finish in order. 

Boxed First Four


A Boxed First Four allows punters to make four selections that can finish in any order in the top four. A Boxed First Four costs a minimum of $24 due to the increased number of winning combinations.

Standout First Four


A Standout First Four allows bettors to select a number of runners to finish 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th with a minimum of two in at least one of those positions.

Flexi First Four


Flexi First Fours allow punters to take choose their total stake and win a percentage of the full payout. This is great way to control the full amount of the bet and invest as much as they are willing to risk.

The Flexi percentage is a fraction of the stake against the cost per full dividend. 

What happens if a runner is scratched?


If one of the selected runners in a First Four bet is scratched or declared a non-runner, wagers are refunded for every combination including that runner. The First Four wager is re-calculated without the scratched runner.

How much does a First Four cost?


A First Four can cost as little a $1 for and much more when more runners are selected or boxed. The more selections a punter makes increases the amount of possible winning combinations there are, therefore the greater stake is required.

Boxed First Fours and Standout First Fours can cost significantly more than than Straight First Fours. The payoff is that they can greatly enhance your chance of winning.
